Looking at the present society, everything seems to be in super sizes? including children. This may seem a gross exaggeration but the increasing number of obesity in children not only in the United States but in other countries around the world has alarmed health experts. There seem to be a trend towards obesity brought on by eating or being exposed to unhealthy food and by the reduction in physical activities.

Unlike with adults where there are a myriad of ways that one can lose weight, children’s options are limited because their bodies are still young and may not be able to withstand weight loss procedures.

Basically, children are recommended to undergo natural ways of losing weight primarily because they can easily do so. Young people are more able to digest their food and convert them to energy. They have faster metabolism and they are flexible enough to be conditioned and toned.

Health experts recommend a combination of healthy diet and exercise for children, but with more emphasis on physical activity rather than on the diet. This is because children are still growing up and depriving them with food may result to loss of nutrients and malnourishment.

Exercise

Obesity is then combated through administering regular physical activities and encouraging them to get into some kind of sports.

In fact, most families have addressed the problem by enrolling their kids in summer sports camp or introducing them to sports that can become their hobbies. In the United States, most kids go into baseball, soccer and football. Some will also go into basketball and swimming.

Eating healthy

Another aspect is the diet. Often, there will be gross reduction on the consumption of junk foods like chips and French fries. The kids are also discouraged to drink sodas and order large and biggie sizes when they are ordering in fast food chains.

Mothers are also cautioned to start cooking healthy foods at home. Encourage eating more veggies and seafood and less of the meat. There should also be a reduction in the usage of oil in cooking foods and if possible, lessen the preparation of fried foods.

Be a good role model

Another area that should look into when trying to help their kids lose weight is the value of learning through example. What you eat will eventually be the food that they will also like to eat. If you can cut down on your consumption of fatty and junk foods, your child will follow suit. Besides, you cannot enforce the reduction of eating those kinds of food without avoiding them yourself.

Be consistent

Consistency on the enforcement of rules is perhaps the most crucial especially in training children to go on a diet. Stick to the plan and do not have free days or reward days.

For instance, if part of the diet is not eating junk foods, there should be no exception. The mistake of most parents is relenting on one occasion because of some special event like a birthday.

This will however tell the child that it is permissible and that it is not really that bad for the body. Another importance of being consistent is the steady loss of weight. One must remember that it is hard to lose weight but very easy to regain it when one stops the diet program.
